Herb will be greatly missed not just for his accounting expertise, which always seemed to be right on point, but also for his graciousness, his ability to simplify the complicated, and for being fair. A true legend.

I met Herb when I visited New York with my family (including my dad, Michael Retelle), a few years ago. I will never forget how warm and welcoming Herb was to my entire family. Not only did we share a wonderful meal together, but great conversation and laughs as well. My dad has always spoken very highly of Herb and his family. I know my time with Herb was limited, but I will always remember our trip to New York and the many stories my dad has shared with me.

I have known Herb for nearly 30 years, as he was our "go to" man when we needed accounting help investigating fidelity claims. Herb was one of the finest persons I have known and he will be truly missed. Not only was he a professional associate, he was a friend in the truest sense.

Herb made a big impression on me when I first got out of law school in 1986. He seemed larger than life in the area of fraud audits. What I remember most was the passion with which he tackled the audits. He found them energizing and clearly loved his profession. It was truly my good fortune to have known him and I know he will be missed by many.

I met Herb in the early 60's when I was a young lawyer and I worked closely with him for 30 plus years thereafter when he acted as consultant or expert for our mutual clients as well as the many years that he was my firm's accountant.Herb was a fine accountant, able to patiently explain the most complex tax and accounting issues to a non-accountant like me.Equally important is that Herb was an all around nice guy with a good sense of humor and a pleasure to be around. He will surely be missed by all of us who knew him and worked with him.

I have known Herb Benton for over 30 years and even though we haven't communicated all that often in the last five, I have fond memories of our working together years ago. I remember Herb as a man who knew his business very well and I grew to respect his knowledge, work ethic and attitude. When I was just starting out in the claim business, Herb and his wife Fran took me under wing and showed great kindness and patience. I grew to view Herb as first a friend and confidant before considering our business relationship. When I changed jobs and roles, I got away from working with the Bentons and one regret I have now is not staying in contact with Herb on a more frequent basis. My condolences go out to the family and may Herb rest in peace. (Andy - I will call you soon )

Dear Herb, You are a good friend of mine and I miss you already. Thank you for all your professional help over the years, but more importantly for your friendship. You're a goofy, fun guy and I smile everyday when I see your picture with Andy and Todd in my office. You counted me as one of your boys when you invited me to stay for an extra day or two after a conference to play golf with you, Andy, and Robbie. I will toast you every time I drink a Robert Mondavi wine - your favorite. Hoib, I'll see you later my friend. Mark
Andy and Robbie, I love your dad. My thoughts are with you guys. Mark

Herb, getting assigned a case where I got to work you was always an adventure to cherish. Whether we were lost in the backwoods of Louisiana, posing for pictures in front of large horse statues, or sharing stories of our families, you always found the joy and humor in what we did. I'll treasure the memories of our adventures, and will put to good use all that I learned from you and the extraordinarily high standards you set. I will miss you dear friend. Julie

Herb, of the many people I've met in my life there is no one person other than my dad and mom that I have learned as much from, been as influenced by, or respected as much as you. It is with honor I tell everyone that I was a friend with one of the best guys to come out of Brooklyn. There will not a day that goes by that I won't miss you. Take Care My Friend. The Irish kid from Wisconsin, Mike

Herb was a true gentleman and a one-of-a kind. He made accounting understandable and was such a pleasure to have on a case. Herb was more than an expert consultant, he was a friend who remembered how your family was and where your kid went to school. I consider myself very lucky to have known and worked with Herb and send my condolences to his family.

Herb was one of the most influential mentors I have had in my 26 years of Fidelity claims work. His knowlege, experience and patience with me as a neophyte were greatly appreciated.
Riding a car with him scared the heck out of me, but the lessons learned when we arrived, always safely, were priceless.
Rest in peace old friend and my God bless.

To Herb’s family:
There are no words I can write that can express the shock and sadness I felt when I heard of Herb’s passing. I knew Herb by working with him for many years as his employee. During that time he was not only a great mentor but also a good friend. Many times he counseled me in my career path as well as guiding me in my personal life. He will be missed and will never be forgotten.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.
