Obituary of Herbert Matthew Benton

Herbert M. Benton Esq., 83, of Warren, New Jersey, passed away on September 17, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn, the son of Leo and Mildred Bronstein. He is a World War II veteran, having served as a Sargent in the Army in the Pacific Theater. He graduated from Syracuse University, received an MBA from New York University and a law degree from Brooklyn College. He also became a Certified Public Accountant. He was an accounting professor at Baruch College, Pace University, and St. John's University. While teaching, Herb also ran his own accounting firm that specialized in investigating fidelity and surety claims. Herb was a pioneer in this industry and served as an expert witness on the prevailing side of 1136 Tenants Corporation v. Max Rothenberg & Co. This is one of the most influential accounting cases in history and is taught in auditing textbooks. It ultimately lead to the adoption of the Compilation and Review of Financial Statements. Herb ran his accounting firm, located in Watchung, New Jersey, for thirty years until turning it over to his son in 2001. He continued to work until the day before his death. Herb loved to travel and had been to every continent. He was an avid reader, loved going to the movies, and enjoyed the company of dogs. His favorite restaurant was the Peter Luger Steakhouse. He had a great sense of humor and a passion for his work. He was predeceased by, Frances Pearl Benton, his wife of 47 years. He was remarried in 2009 and is survived by his loving wife Frances Roselli. They lived in Warren New Jersey where they played poker and enjoyed the social club. Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Robert and daughter-in law Diane and their children, Helen, Nathan, Drew and Harry; his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Lisa, and step-grandchildren, Nicolas, Dylan and Jenna; and his stepsons Ron and Gregory.
