Sr. Carol Jaruszewski

Obituary of Sr. Carol Jaruszewski

Sister Carol Jaruszewski, RSM, formerly Sister Anne Mary, age 74, died peacefully on December 5, 2019, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, NJ. Sister was born in Trenton, NJ to Helen and Raymond Jaruszewski. She celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation in the Byzantine Catholic Church. Sister Carol attended St. Mary’s Assumption School and was an alumni of Cathedral High School in Trenton, NJ. It was here that she met and witnessed the charism and community of the Sisters of Mercy. Sister Carol worked at Bell Telephone and then entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1964. She graduated from Georgian Court College, now University, Lakewood, NJ with a degree in Education and Art Education. Sister Carol also received a Masters in Fine Arts from Montclair University in NJ and a Masters in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in Chicago, IL.

Sister Carol taught in elementary education and art in St. Mary Academy, Lakewood, NJ; St. Francis Cabrini, Piscataway, NJ; and theology and art at St. Mary’s High School, South Amboy, NJ; and Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, NJ. She became a Pastoral Associate at Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell, NJ for 30 years where she developed many programs for the parishioners. After retiring from active ministry, Sister Carol continued to volunteer as a spiritual director and pastoral counselor. She was a resource for those living with cancer and published a book entitled “Let Me Walk the Journey with You”.

Sister Carol was an artist, poet, and writer who published in magazines on topics of vocation and healing through art. She exhibited in several patient art exhibits at the Cancer Center at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ where she participated in Art Therapy.

Sister Carol expressed her spiritual journey through poetry,  prose, and art in her seasonal greeting cards, that she shared with many persons.

Sister Carol had many ministries, but perhaps her greatest has been the ministry of positivity and faith, which she practiced every day of her life.

She is survived by her brother James Januszewski and his wife Mary Ann; her sister Joyce Costello and her husband John; a nephew Mark Januszewski and his wife Jen and their daughters Nicole, Sara, and Olivia; and a niece Patricia Rexroth and her husband Matthew.
