Obituary of Norma M. Miele
Dr. Norma M. Miele (nee Masini) was born in Newark, NJ in 1927 and spent her childhood in Kearny, NJ. Daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Masini she was one of four children. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Andrew R. Miele Jr., and her brothers Joseph Masini and Frank Masini.
Education was Norma’s life. She received her B.A. in Secondary Education from the College of St. Elizabeth’s and an M.A. at Kean University as a Reading Specialist. She earned her Doctorate in Special Education from Yeshiva University while working full time and raising her two children.
Norma’s stellar career in education began in Kearny, NJ as a classroom teacher. From there she went on to become a Reading Specialist in Little Falls, NJ, an Adjunct Instructor in Reading/Literacy at Essex County College, a Learning Disabilities Teaching Consultant in Parsippany and cumulated her achievements with her position as the Director of Special Services for Randolph Township Schools. She was a published author of several education related publications.
She loved the beach, boating, the shore and golf. She met her future husband, Andrew R. Miele Jr., on the beach at Belmar and is rumored to have told her sister Arlene “I met the most handsome boy!” They married in 1951 and lived in North Caldwell, NJ for 42 years.
Norma is survived by her beloved sister Arlene Onnembo, her daughter Michelle E. Miele, her son Andrew R. Miele III, daughter-in-law Angela and grandson Andrew R. Miele IV. She was the beloved Aunt of Diane Barone, John and Sharon Onnembo, Suzanne and Edward Olimpio, Rosalind and Marcel Plate, Robert and Anna Masini, David and Teresa Masini, Joseph Masini. Norma will also be missed by her several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2020 from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung, NJ. Funeral Services will begin at 9:00 am Thursday, March 19, 2020 at the Funeral Home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass at St Mary’s Stony Hill Church in Watchung. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Norma’s honor to St. Mary’s-Stony Hill Church in Watchung, NJ or your own favorite charity are welcomed.
