Obituary of Carmen Macaluso

Carmen Macaluso, age 88, passed away early morning on Thursday October 15, 2020 at the Arista Care Health Center in Plainfield. Born and raised in Manhattan NY, Carmen had spent most of her adult life in Plainfield, NJ. She had received her bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Queens NY. Carmen began her career in Manhattan as a nursery schoolteacher and in what would become a lifelong passion in raising and caring for children. After marring the love of her life Martin Macaluso in 1953, Carmen started her second career, as homemaker, raising her own six children. She later opened a childcare center at her home in Plainfield, helping to care for countless children for over 30 years. Carmen’s catholic faith was very important to her and was an active communicant of St. Mary’s RC Church in Plainfield. She was also an avid reader and will be missed by all. Martin Macaluso, her husband of 56 years predeceased her in 2009. She is survived by her children Theresa Landry [Stephen], Catherine McCutcheon [John], Thomas Macaluso [Maureen], Rita Gregory [Ronald], Philip Macaluso, Maria Gittens [Joel], her sister Rafaela (Bette) Volpe, her grandchildren Rita and Joseph Landry, Sean and Christopher McCutcheon, Colleen Owens, Craig and Erin Macaluso, Richard and Rachel Gregory, and Christian, Dominic, Antonina, and Ian Gittens, and her great-granddaughter Alma Hutson. A visitation will be held on Tuesday October 20, 2020 from 5 to 6 pm at St. Mary’s RC Church 516 W 6th St, Plainfield, NJ 07060 a funeral mass will immediately follow at 6pm at the church. The entombment will be held privately on Wednesday at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. Funeral services are under the direction of Higgins Home for Funerals Watchung, NJ A memorial donation may be made in Carmen’s memory to your local food bank or soup kitchen.
