I only met JoAnn once at a Ribbons of Hope banquet. We sat together along with Lisa and her moms friends and family. It was my first banquet. It is easy to see where Lisa gets her vibrant personality and smile. JoAnn was so welcoming and warm and made me feel like an old family friend. May you forever rest in the palm of our Lord.

JoAnn and I first met by phone when I was her core group leader at the Community Bible Study class in Basking Ridge about 25+ years ago. JoAnn had been sick, and so she could not attend class at first, so I called her each week. I think we soon realized, even before we set eyes on each other, that we would become good friends. JoAnn has been an inspiration and a mentor to me in my faith journey. I will be forever grateful to her for how she shared God's answers to her prayers and helped me to believe that God cares for each one of us in a very personal way. JoAnn you will be missed so deeply by your family and close friends, and I will always remember how you shared your faith and your love with so many people..

She was the best friend I could have hoped for. So loving and warm and funny and helpful. We had so many happy times together. We used to go out to dinner and the movies with other friends. We had special birthday luncheons. and fun nights of mahjong. I will miss our talks about family and all our laughter. I will never forget you JoAnn.
Love,
Marie

I had the privilege of getting to know JoAnn through our bible study class. Her faith inspired everyone. She was funny and smart, and a joy to be with. And, she had mercy on my very poor math abilities when we had lunch together! May our Lord bless her family and friends and may He comfort them with the knowledge that she is with her Savior in Heaven.

I remember JoAnn in so many different ways, her smile, it brightened the Room, it was infectious, when she smiled you just had to smile back at her. Her laugh And her giggle, I loved it, was contagious, her kindness, it was legendary. We had many many talks about so many subjects, JoAnn had the ability To really listen to a conversation, and make you feel like you were such a big part of her life. Her faith in God was a very big part of her life, Her prayers were comforting and so heartfelt. JoAnn was always amazingly straightforward, she would definitely tell you what she thought. I remember her saying “ if you don’t wanna know what I think, then don’t ask me the question”. We could not see one another for very long periods of time and all of a sudden I would pick up the phone and call her or sh e would call me, and we would say “I was just thinking about you“, And we would talk like we had been together yesterday. When my daughter Sheryl was gravely ill with Covid, she called me often to pray For Sheryl with me. Her caring about us Was so obvious and tangible, and her love was so comforting. Our friendship was over many years and I will never forget her. I could go on and on about this wonderful woman, I just know that I will miss her terribly. The only saving grace to our losing her, is that I am certain that she is with Bob, the love of her life. That makes me smile. I looked at the video of your family, and in every single picture of Bob and JoAnn, I saw Bob touching her, every single picture, Their love was so obvious, and I’m sure they’re together smiling on all of us right now. God bless you JoAnn, I love you, And I will miss you.

To the Scalera family: Lucia and I offer our condolences and our prayer that JoAnn’s soul may be purified and that she rest in eternal peace, and that all of the family find the peace and love of Christ in this time of sorrow.
JoAnn now knows the universal truth and desires us to consider our own place in eternity, and whether it will be with the Lord. We should be aware of the difference between our time in this world and in eternity, and our opportunity now for conversion and the moment of judgment.
It makes no sense to celebrate God’s goodness and mercy to JoAnn if we are not attentive and responsive to those realities in our own lives. JoAnn would want this encounter with eternity to change us, to turn us from sin and toward the Lord. I am certain that JoAnn prayed that she and Robert would be with Christ and that all those in her life would accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and through the mercy of Christ have everlasting life. As a faithful Catholic, she would want all to attend Mass.
Mass is our pathway and the greatest prayer we can offer. Jesus himself becomes present at every Mass, under the form of bread and wine, so that we can unite all of our prayers of thanksgiving, sorrow and petition with Christ himself, as an offering to the Father. All of this, with a view to eternity, where we hope to enjoy that perfect union with God himself and to see JoAnn, Robert , and all our loved ones again, and with them rejoice in the communion of saints.
When attending Mass, join with those throughout the world who pray the Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great, and dedicate yours for JoAnn and Robert, and for all those in your life. In a vision of Our Lord to St. Gertrude the Great, He told her that the following prayer will release souls from purgatory each time it is said. The prayer is extended to include living sinners as well:
“Eternal Father, I offer thee the most precious blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in purgatory, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home and withing my family. Amen”

I remember when we had our first child and traveled to see Dori. Momma JoAnn took our Logan in her arms and told us, “I got him, go have fun!” She always had positive things to say about people and life. Her smile brightened the room wherever she was. She will live on in our memories and our hearts. Sharyn and Gary Peak
