Obituary of Sr. Joyce Jacobs
Sister Joyce Jacobs died peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ.
Sister Joyce, the former Sister Mary Paracleta, was born in Perth Amboy, NJ. She is the eldest daughter of the late Stephania and Edward Jacobs.
Sister Joyce attended elementary school in Brownstown, NJ and St. Mary High School in South Amboy, NJ. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1951 and later received a BA degree in Art from Georgian Court College, later University; a Master's Degree in art from Notre Dame University and a Master's Degree in Theology from Georgian Court.
Her teaching career brought her to St. Francis Cathedral School, Metuchen; St. John School, Collingswood, St. Matthew School, Edison and Holy Spirit High School, Absecon. In 1981 she started her career in higher education at Georgian Court, Lakewood. She was an Art Instructor and in 1992 was appointed Assistant Art Professor. Her career in Art at Georgian Court spanned more than 25 years.
Much of her art work depicts the exploration of the watercolor medium which has been a lifelong journey for her as an artist. She concentrated on featuring many historic aspects of the University. In her words, "To capture these fleeting moments in the medium of water color was a delight." As Sister Joyce continued her journey in Mercy she always thanked God for all the blessings made possible by her simple "yes" to an invitation planted in her heart more than sixty years ago.
She is survived by her dearly loved sister, Patricia Grover- Moore, her husband John, her brother Edward Jacobs his wife, Connie and sister Barbara Sebok,, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Wake will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am, with the Welcome Home Service at 9:45 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ 07069
