Johanna was a dearest friend of 25+ years through my work at Community Reach of Montgomery County. Although she was an active Board Board Member, donor, and volunteer, I considered her my friend too as well as a friend of my family. We go back many years and shared wonderful memories. My condolences to the extended family, friends, and everybody who knew her. I am missing her already and my prayers, and eternal gratitude will live in my heart. Rest in Peace Johanna!

I met Johanna through my work at Community Reach of Montgomery County. She was an ardent supporter of the organization, giving her time as a member of our event committees, donations of items to benefit clients and raise funds, and providing financial donations to support our services to help the most vulnerable in Montgomery County, MD. We will miss her passion!

Johanna Marshall was not simply FROM Plainfield, New Jersey. Johanna Marshall WAS Plainfield, New Jersey!!! Joanna knew everything, every person, and every place associated with the Queen City. If you wanted to find someone from any PHS class, you called Johanna. If you wanted to know any history about Plainfield, New Jersey, you called Johanna, and, if you wanted to just feel good about growing up in our wonderful hometown, you called Johanna. Indeed, if my friend wanted to run for mayor of the city she cherished, mayor she would become without missing a beat!
Yes, Johanna certainly will be missed, but, certainly never be forgotten. She was an exceptional woman, talented in many ways, and, loved because she loved everyone right back!

Johanna and I grew up together In Plainfield. We spent many years together at Temple Sholem in Sunday school. However, we were not in higher school together.
I will be forever grateful to her in getting my father Harold S Yood inducted into the Plainfield High School Hall of fame and she along with Leslie Ulsan making sure he got his COVID vaccine. He was so proud of this and the beautiful shawl she crocheted for him for his 100th birthday.
A true giver of love for all those who knew her and those who reaped her kindness.

I knew Johanna practically from the time I was born. She lived down the street from my family in Plainfield. I last saw her about 15 years ago when we were both living in Maryland.

Johanna was a first cousin to me (and my sister Myrna) as her father and my mother were brother and sister. Because she lived in the D.C. area, we did not see each other that much but we often communicated by e-mail and phone, mostly about legal cases. I am a lawyer and because Jo was a legal stenographer, we usually ended up talking about each other's cases. Jo was not your ordinary court reporter; she was a world class stenographer. The company she worked for did a lot of transcription overseas at international legal and business conferences. Johanna was often chosen to attend and work the conference. This was a very cushy appointment, as you can imagine. But it is rare for reporters in that field to be asked to cover such work in a foreign jurisdiction, unless of course you are gifted, as was she.
Jo loved to travel and, in addition to her stenographic gigs overseas, she also traveled a lot on her own. She had been to Alaska several times and when i asked her to let me know what I should do there if I went, she not only sent me several articles and brochures about it, she gave me lecture-sized advice on where to go, what to do and what to eat. She also traveled to Ukraine where her father was born. (My mother was the first of the 5 Marshall siblings to have been born in the USA.) The family name was actually Mofshof but was changed to Marshall when the family emigrated to New York. So when i finally took a trip to Ukraine, in advance of my trip she sent me literally a guidebook of things i should do, not only in Odessa, where the family grew up before emigrating, but also in Kiev. She was so interested in the family's background, she hired Ukrainian genealogists and translators to track down the family's documents, ending up with birth certificates, residency papers, work papers and others.. She also went to the very house our family lived in, on the Black Sea in Odessa, and photographed it.
I once called her to say i was going to be in her neighborhood in Plainfield and could i visit her. I explained I was going to a wine store near her to get a red wine that I was unable to find in New York City. After I got the wine, i drove over to her house only to be met by a deer standing in the middle of the dead-end street to which she recently moved, and right in front of her house. Now to a Brooklyn guy this is quite a sight, a deer standing in the middle of the street in a somewhat civilized town. The deer looked just like Bambi but a little bigger. Well you should have heard Jo curse out that poor little deer when i remarked how adorable it was and how wonderful it must be to have deer walking around your house. Evidently, in Plainfield (and maybe other New Jersey towns) deer are not as revered as they are in Brooklyn. I will never forget that day, as I learned that Johanna, who i never heard say a curse word in her life, knew all the words and was not afraid to use them, at least not to a Brooklyn cousin. She ended up telling me she had researched the wine i sought out in New Jersey and wanted me to join her in tasting a bottle she had which she thought was a better one. I declined because I was driving but we went on to debate wines for about an hour that day. I never realized she knew so much about wines.
I truly enjoyed all of my visits, calls and e mails with her and will miss her very much.
It is indeed sad that Jo has left us so suddenly and prematurely. I am happy to have these memories and many others of her.

My wife and I met Johanna when we joined the Oratorio Society of Washington around 1991. Some We would often join her and a couple of others for dinner at a Chinese restaurant across Wisconsin Avenue from the church where we rehearsed. Johanna had a deep knowledge and love of the choral repertoire.
Some other choir members offered memories about her:
Johanna used to like to share stories related to language and pronunciation, particularly German. I will miss her! (We kept in touch via FB after she left the area.)
Johanna and I kept in touch over the years via FB. She always loved Russian music and would drop me a line when she heard a new recording. I will miss her.
She and I also kept in touch. What a sad thing; may she rest in peace.
I kept in touch with her through FB as well. May her memory be a blessing.
Like others, she found community and family in choirs. She had regular church solo jobs and she would sometimes drop in and join for big choral pieces at other churches. Her voice was always welcomed.
When my older son was born in 1993, Johanna was simply delighted with him. During his first year, he was often at rehearsals in a backpack. She saw less of our younger son because two children swallowed the time we had had for the big chorus.
Johanna and I ran into each other on various charitable committees. For some time she was a member of a county ministry group to help end homelessness.
In sum, Johanna Marshall sang well and did well. We miss you, Johanna.

Johanna is sadly missed by our UNICO friends. She was extremely generous and caring to those less fortunate. She participated in our chapter’s food bank drives and scholarship peogram. Johanna knew my love for pistachios and one time when she served as our chaper’s secretary I stopped by her house to pick up a document. She surprised me with a 1-1/2 lb bag of pistachios. Rest in Peace my good friend.
