Mieke was for many years my superior tennis partner. As we were both Dutch we had an immediate rapport with the advantage we could switch to Dutch if needed. My husband and I enjoyed many Saturday dinners together at our tennis club. She was always fun to be with and I will miss her.

Mieke was a dear soul. A lifelong friend to my parents, Skip and Concie Danforth, she radiated love, laughter and sometimes even sported a great hand played around the bridge table. I, like "Little Mieke," remember performing gracious acts around our respective parents bridge tables, sweeping away the full ashtrays and filling those silver snack bowls and trays.
I remember going to see Mieke play tennis on those fabulous grass tennis courts she loved so dearly (I think she may have even let me take a few strokes out there) and the countless hours of our parents enjoying life's adventures together. From Brown University, to Cape Cod to Short Hills and Montclair, New Jersey and in between. Elegant, and the best friend my mother could ever have, they shared uproarious laughter together, egging each other on until they couldn't breathe, sharing stories of raising children, their marriages, their families and travel stories.
Mieke helped me prepare for the day that perhaps, she and mom would take Little Mieke and I to Holland, by teaching me such useful sayings as "eieren met spek" (eggs with bacon).
With Mieke's impish grin at an English phrase, which she knew would make us all smile, she leaves us all remembering her kind words, her giant heart, her elegant style, her dedicated love for her daughter and family. To dear, loved Mieke and to all; Vrede zij met jou en je familie

Mieke was my stepmother. She was married to my father for over 40 years and gave him much joy. For that I will always be grateful.

I'll always have fond memories of my Aunt Mieke. In Maplewood, New Jersey with its bucolic tree lined streets. I remember her cozy little breakfast nook with an old style toaster, sitting there impatiently waiting for the bread to be done. Aunt Mieke would judiciously butter and jam the toast, clearly enjoying my anticipation. The smell of the bread, the sound of her accented voice, the cute little breakfast nook all felt like a shrine to warmth and goodness.
Another fond memory was on the screened back porch at Uncle Dolf’s house in Marblehead. The adults had cocktails and were eating caviar that Dolf brought. After playing with my brothers in that enchanted yard I had somehow got a splinter in my hand. Well, Aunt Mieke was the expert at splinter removal and brought out the Witch Hazel and some tweezers. She had me sit on her lap and I remember her admonitions to quit squirming and to stop whining while she performed that important surgery. It’s the warmth and love with which she did it that could only come from an Aunt.
Lastly, as a kid living down South, visiting her and Ted at their house in Short Hills had a magical quality to it. The stately old house seemed so large with its many windows overlooking that huge backyard. The trees and feel of the neighborhood was so different to what I was used to in Panama. She and Ted had that big old Cadillac Sedan that felt presidential when I rode in it. Aunt Mieke fit that house so well and I can understand why she didn’t want to leave. I remember how she would play host while all her brothers were visiting. She had a wise air about her that I imagine, could only come from being the only sister to so many brothers. How lucky am I to have had such a wonderful Dutch Aunt.
