Obituary of Edward J. Schmidt
Edward John Schmidt, age 94, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the Eastern Star Nursing Center in Bridgewater, NJ. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Edward had resided in South Plainfield for many years before moving to Bridgewater 21 years ago.
Edward is a graduate of Holy Trinity Catholic School in Brooklyn, NY, where he made several lifelong friendships. Edward proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. Prior to his retirement, Edward worked as a purchasing agent for Bell Labs in Murray Hill for over 42 years. He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament RC Church in Martinsville and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Hills, Council #5959, for over 70 years.
Edward was an excellent cook and baker; he was well known for his Christmas desserts, especially his famous fruit cake and chocolate chip cookies. He also used his cooking talents to benefit others by volunteering to cook for fundraising events at both Blessed Sacrament and Bridgewater UMC. Edward also loved bowling; he continued playing in a league well into his 80s. He was an accomplished woodworker; there are many examples of his work left throughout town.
Edward is predeceased by his wives, Audrey, Dorothy, and Marie.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sallyann Voorhees Schmidt, a brother John Schmidt; his nieces, Patti Hreha and her husband, Mike and Noreen Bandeff; his nephews, Alex Bandeff and his wife, Susan; John Schmidt and his wife, Gerri, and Gerard Schmidt; great-nieces and nephews, AJ Bandeff and his wife Melissa, Blake Bandeff, Christopher Schmidt, and Stephen Schmidt and Kayla Schmidt.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament RC Church in Martinsville, followed by the entombment at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in South Plainfield, NJ.
