Ellen,
We only knew each other 2.5 years but I feel like we were kindred spirits, both with deep roots in NYC, both losing our husbands in the last few years, our love of the theater, and dep our love of family and traditions. We had so may eye opening similarities… my father was Albert and Alphonso was your family’s version. We had so many fun times, attending theatre and lunch with your other nyc friends that you knew I would feel comfortable with. You were like a bright light. I remember the night of the oldies’ performance in our clubhouse. You were singled out by the performer with a free CD because you were the most involved and enthusiastic audience member.
After a neighbor informed me of your passing today because she knew we were friends, I called your home to hear your voice one last time. Today when I went to the Warrenbrook I told the director there of your passing. She shared how when they didn’t have enough students to hold a class there, you paid the difference so the class could be held. I remember at Jerry’s goodbye party, you and I were the only two people who brought him goodbye gifts of wine!
I called your phone today so I could hear your voice one last time, after a neighbor informed me that you had passed last week. I feel like I should have known something was wrong last week when we spoke and you said you weren’t going to your granddaughter’s with your family. I knew how much you admired her and advised me of the wisdom she imparted to you from her education and her intuitiveness. I know she will achieve greatness in her profession. I was also so moved by your love of your grandsons and how you loved to shop with him.
I remember the wonderful time we had at your son’s home in Hillsborough last year. I will miss you dearly my friend.
