Obituary of James Bell Flanagan
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Bell Flanagan, affectionately known as Jim or Jimmy, on September 20, 2024, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville, New Jersey. Jim was 62 years old and had been a proud resident of Martinsville for the past 35 years. Born in Summit, New Jersey, to the late James Flanagan and Mildred Bell, he grew up in Warren and carried with him a lifelong love for his roots and community.
Jim pursued higher education at Mississippi State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and accounting. It was there he embraced his passion for the Bulldogs as a proud member of the Sigma Chi social fraternity, a commitment that remained a significant part of his life. After college, Jim channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into founding Pyramid Management Company, developing subdivisions of single-family homes in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. His career flourished when he joined K. Hovnanian Development Group in 2003, eventually becoming the Area Vice President of the Pennsylvania division. Jim’s professional achievements were recognized with numerous accolades and commendations throughout his career.
Upon retirement, Jim pursued his true passion—fishing. After obtaining his captain’s license, he founded Aubrey Glenn Charters, a testament to his love for the sea. His happiest moments were spent aboard his boat, casting lines and creating memories. An avid outdoorsman, Jim also enjoyed duck hunting and was a fervent fan of music. He started and played in the rock ‘n’ roll band “Roadhouse” and was an enthusiastic collector of guitars, a legacy preserved by his family and friends.
A dedicated sports fan, Jim cheered enthusiastically for the New York Mets and Giants, and, of course, the MSU Bulldogs, embodying his spirited nature and love of the game.
Jim leaves behind his daughter, Aubrey Glenn Flanagan; his son, James Boyd Loton Flanagan; his ex-wife and best friend, Kelly Flanagan; brothers, Aubrey B. Flanagan and his wife, Ann Marie; and Stephen L. Flanagan and his wife, Deborah, nieces and nephews Antonia, Hanks, and Bryan. He also leaves a legacy of dear friends and extended family, who will miss his vibrant spirit and generous heart.
