Obituary of Maurice R. Lipton

Dr. Maurice Raymond Lipton, a longtime North Plainfield resident, died April 29 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. He was 85. Born May 17, 1918 in New York City, Dr. Lipton grew up in Brooklyn. He graduated from Boys High School in 1934 and Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in 1940. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Belvoire, Virginia. Settling in Plainfield after the war, he practiced optometry from 1946 to 1991, spending many years as an active member of the New Jersey Optometric Association. Dr. Lipton enjoyed a fine reputation among his patients and colleagues and within the community. Dr. Lipton became a Mason in 1944, attaining the level of Grand master of Plainfields Emmanuel Lodge in 1955. He was an active member of Temple Sholom in Plainfield, serving as an officer as well as on the religious school board of education and the cemetery committee. His love for the theater led him to a long involvement with Sholoms Temple Players. He was also a founding member of the Plainfield Area Little Theater Council, which supported local high school drama groups. A North Plainfield resident since 1955, Dr. Lipton was president of the West End School PTA and a member of the boroughs Board of Education. He is survived by Miriam, his wife of 51 years; his sister Hilda Jaffe of Verona; his son David; his daughter Carol of Paris, France; his son Alan of Berkeley, California; and his granddaughters Beatrice and Ella. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 461 Somerset St., North Plainfield followed by interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin.
